It was one of the first universities in the United States to make community service a graduation requirement for all undergraduates; having a core curriculum centered on social justice. Due to ongoing financial challenges, the university closed at the end of the 2023–2024 academic year, with ownership of the university's campus passing to Villanova University.

The property, originally named Woodcrest, was the estate of James W. Paul, managing partner for Drexel & Company Banking (now JP Morgan Chase) and a member of the wealthy Drexel family from Philadelphia.
