In 1997, the school became the only HBCU to establish accredited architecture, landscape architecture, and city and regional planning programs. A plan was announced by the university president, Earl Richardson in 2005, for the program to establish school status and it was designated as the School of Architecture and Planning (S+AP) in 2008.
