Through a statewide network of nine research facilities, the Agricultural Experiment Station conducts basic and applied research supporting agriculture, natural resources management, environmental quality, and improved quality of life.

In the 2022 college rankings by U.S. News & World Report, NMSU was tied for 263 among National Universities and tied for 132 among public universities in the US. USN&WR ranked several programs among the top 200 in the nation, including the college of engineering's graduate program at 149, the nursing school's master's program tied at 139 and doctoral program at 109, and the college of education's graduate program tied at 125.
