In 2005 nearly half of the institution's students were from low-participation groups and 28% from low-participation neighbourhoods. In 2016, according to an analysis in The Sunday Times, Newman had the third highest working class intake, and the second highest state school intake, of all universities in the UK. The same survey showed that 1 in 3 of Newman's students is a mature student.
