The original Experimental College, known as E.C., was created in 1965 and lasted until 1969. The revived Experimental College, known as EXCO, allows students to create curriculums and teach one-unit courses about any topic. EXCO is part of the Department of Undergraduate Education and Academic Planning.

People without formal admission to the university can enroll in undergraduate or graduate courses on a space-available basis, through the College of Professional & Global Education's Open University program. Up to undergraduate 24 units can be applied towards a bachelor's degree or six units towards a master's degree at SF State.
