Sonoma State is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Several of the schools within Sonoma State also have additional accreditations, such as the School of Business and Economics, which is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. The Mental Health Counseling master's degree program is accredited by the Masters in Psychology and Counseling Accreditation Council (MPCAC). Sonoma State University is the only California school that belongs to the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges.

Art from the Heart, an annual art auction, has been held at the university since 1984 to raise funds for the art gallery's display, advertising, and lecture program by selling invited artists' work.
