Students and faculty began lobbying for a new name and mascot during the late 1940s. On March 19, 1951, the student body voted to change the official name to the Salukis. The selection of the Saluki, a royal dog of ancient Egypt, as the university's mascot is often attributed to its reputation as a fast and tenacious hunter and the southern Illinois region's colloquial nickname, "Little Egypt".
