and protest marches including a Tuskegee to Montgomery contingent of the Selma to Montgomery March on March 21, 1965. Student activist, Samuel (Sammy) Younge, Jr. was one of TIAL's leaders, and the first Black college student to die in the Civil Rights Movement. His murder by a white gas station attendant, Marvin Segrest, and Segrest's subsequent acquittal by an all-white jury galvanized thousands to march on the city of Tuskegee in protest.
In 1968, student activists seeking more say over their education engaged in a series of protests, sit-ins, walk-outs and other demonstrations at Tuskegee Institute in an effort to get the administration to hear and act upon their demands regarding the quality of life on campus, the quality of the education they received, mandatory Reserve Officer's Training Corps (ROTC) participation, and other grievances.
