hired Theophilus Gould Steward, a politician, theologian and missionary, to join WU's faculty in 1907. He was a leading scholar at the university in the early 20th century and was prominent in the American Negro Academy, founded in 1897 to support the work of scholars, writers and other intellectuals.

WU classics professor William Sanders Scarborough succeeded Jones as president; serving in that role until 1920. Scarborough had been a teacher at WU for 31 years prior to his appointment as president in 1908, and was a well known and respected scholar of Greek and Latin outside of WU. His public standing as a lauded scholar provided him with many connections within wider academia, and he was an active member in many scholarly and learned societies. These connection provided him with greater access to philanthropic organizations and individuals than WU's previous presidents.
