Saitö Monument. At the west entrance of Luce Hall is a Japanese granite pagoda erected in memory of Hiroshi Saitö, Japanese Ambassador to the United States from 1934 to 1939. Ambassador Saitö was admired in Washington for his efforts to maintain U.S.-Japan diplomatic relations as tension built between the two nations over the Japanese invasion of Manchuria. The monument was presented by the Saitö family in gratitude for, "the courtesy extended by [the] institution at the time of the [Saitö's] departure," on the cruiser Astoria. The monument was erected in June 1941, less than 6 months before the opening of hostilities between the two countries.
