VMI is spending another $200 million to build the VMI Center for Leadership and Ethics, to be used by cadets, Washington and Lee University students, and other U.S. and international students. The funding will also support "study abroad" programs, including joint ventures with Oxford and Cambridge Universities in England and many other universities.

In 2025, VMI offered 14 majors in 6 academic departments: Arts and Humanities, Engineering, Information and Social Sciences, Life Sciences, Natural Sciences, and ROTC. The institute was ranked 65 in the 2025 U.S. News & World Report rankings of "National Liberal Arts Colleges".
