ASU faculty includes Nobel Laureates, Royal Society members, National Academy members, and members of the National Institutes of Health. ASU Professor Donald Johanson, who discovered the 3.18 million year old fossil hominid Lucy (Australopithecus) in Ethiopia, established the Institute of Human Origins (IHO) in 1981. The institute was established in Berkeley, California, and later moved to ASU in 1997. As one of the leading research organizations in the United States devoted to the science of human origins, IHO pursues a transdisciplinary strategy for field and analytical paleoanthropological research.
