Since the autumn of 2014, Southern Methodist University's undergraduate housing system has operated on a residential commons model rooted in the colleges of Oxford and Cambridge universities in England. Undergraduate students are required to live on campus for their first two years, and they must live their first year in one of the eleven residential commons that they are randomly sorted into after enrollment.
