In the 2024 U.S. News & World Report rankings, UH placed in the top 50 universities for social mobility. That same year, the University of Houston Law Center was ranked tied for 63rd in the nation and 5th in the state of Texas in the graduate school rankings. The undergraduate entrepreneurship studies program at the Bauer College of Business was also ranked 9th in the nation. In the 2024 The Princeton Review and Entrepreneur magazine rankings, the undergraduate entrepreneurship program ranked 1st in the nation.
Critics, including University of Houston faculty members, have alleged that the university's improvement in the U.S. News & World Report rankings was largely due to changes in the ranking methodology which removed key measures of academic excellence, such as the percentage of faculty with the highest degrees, the percentage of students in the top 10 percent of their high school class, and average class size.
