In 1896, Holmes Smith, professor of Drawing and History of Art, designed what became the basis for the university seal. The seal is made up of elements from the Washington family coat of arms, an open book representing a university, and the symbol of Louis IX, whom the city is named after. In 1915, The university’s adopted its motto is Per veritatem vis, which translates to "Strength through truth".
